INTERVIEW 'There is only one race, the human race'


YOU can hear the reality of  Sowetan life in the powerful album by the Urban Village Quartet Udondolo (Walking Stick)   an amalgam of traditional Zulu music, Marabi dance rhythms, township jazz and the sounds of South African working-class experience.
Its roots are in the hard life of apartheid-accursed existence, internal migration and decades of political and cultural resistance.
The band, according to drummer Xolani Mtshali, began in 2015 as the brainchild of guitarist Ntsane Lerato Lichaba. Childhood friends from their teens, Lichaba and bassist Simangaliso Dlamini were house and dance DJs before playing live instruments and the former met flautist and vocalist Tubatsi Mpho Moloi through a recreational hall where they learned piano and guitar. ....

‘Dindi’ arrives alongside a quietly powerful video shot by rising South African talent Justice Mukheli.
Speaking about the causes that prompted them to write the track, Urban Village say; “‘Dindi’ – more accurately put Dark-Dindi – was a colloquial term, which describes people who are dark skinned, as to address Black Pride.
For this was a necessary term to be used as an awakening for people being raised and brought up under a certain oppression, where all the dark-skinned people, especially young women, would have attempted to bleach their skin in order to be accepted as beautiful. The song promotes people of all colours to be proud in the very skin that they are in, no matter the shade and texture.” ....
